Background
Childhood adversity has been associated with onset of psychosis in adulthood but these studies have used only general definitions of this environmental risk indicator. Therefore, we sought to explore the prevalence of more specific adverse childhood experiences amongst those with and without psychotic disorders using detailed assessments in a large epidemiological case-control sample (AESOP).
MethodData were collected on 182 first-presentation psychosis cases and 246 geographically matched controls in two UK centres. Information relating to the timing and frequency of exposure to different types of childhood adversity (neglect, antipathy, physical and sexual abuse, local authority care, disrupted living arrangements and lack of supportive figure) was obtained using the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse Questionnaire.
ResultsPsychosis cases were three times more likely to report severe physical abuse from the mother that commenced prior to 12 years of age, even after adjustment for other significant forms of adversity and demographic confounders. A non-significant trend was also evident for greater prevalence of reported severe maternal antipathy amongst those with psychosis. Associations with maternal neglect and childhood sexual abuse disappeared after adjusting for maternal physical abuse and antipathy. Paternal maltreatment and other forms of adversity were not associated with psychosis nor was there evidence of a dose–response effect.
ConclusionsThese findings suggest that only specific adverse childhood experiences are associated with psychotic disorders and only in a minority of cases. If replicated, this greater precision will ensure that research into the mechanisms underlying the pathway from childhood adversity to psychosis is more fruitful.

1. Salmonella incidents in Northern Ireland from 1951–58 are compared with the published findings in England and Wales.
2. Caecal swabs from 489 pigs killed in two bacon factories showed a salmonella isolation rate of 2%.
3. Salmonella organisms were isolated from twenty-three out of 100 samples of caecal faeces and from only six of 100 caecal swabs taken from the same animals. Three per cent of meat samples from these pigs and 70% of sausage samples from this meat contained Salmonellae.
4. Rectal swabs from 162 pigs on five farms producing infected pigs showed Salmonellae in 9% of those examined.
5. Twenty-four per cent of pig-meal samples taken on these farms contained Salmonellae, and the same salmonella types were found in the meal at the mill and in fish meal and bone meal before mixing.
6. It is probable that some salmonella types pass from feedingstuffs through pigs to human food and cause human infections.
We should like to express our thanks to Dr Joan Taylor of the Salmonella Reference Laboratory, Colindale, for typing many of the Salmonellae; to Mr J. Stuart of the Veterinary Division, Ministry of Agriculture, Northern Ireland, for help in sampling at an abattoir and on the farms; to the staff of the Northern Ireland Hospitals Authority, Central Laboratory, for technical assistance; to Mr J. Patton and Dr D. Luke for much help and advice at many stages of this inquiry; to Miss A. McCann for the secretarial work; to the Northern Ireland Hospitals Authority for a grant towards the expenses in 1958; and to our colleagues in the Local Authorities, General Practice, on the farms and in the factories who were always most helpful and co-operative.

The chromosomes of Platynereis dumerilii (Audouin & Milne-Edwards) are described here for the first time. A modal chromosome number of 2n=28 was recorded, based on counts conducted on metaphase spreads prepared from 24-h-old larvae. The karyotype comprises seven pairs, each of relatively large median (arm ratio, p/q=l.00–0.59) and submedian (arm ratio, 0.59–0.33) chromosomes. Attempts were also made to band the chromosomes using C-banding and silver staining methods. C-band-positive regions were localized on four chromosome pairs (three median, one submedian). A further two chromosome pairs (both median) were observed to have terminal nucleolar organizer regions (NORs). To our knowledge, this is the first time that these banding methods have been successfully applied to any polychaete species. These results are discussed in relation to the karyotypic variation within the class Polychaeta, and the family Nereidae in particular. A stable karyotype consisting of a moderate number of large and morphologically well-differentiated chromosomes, coupled with the ease of culture under laboratory conditions and short generation time, suggests that P. dumerilii is a potentially suitable model for evaluating marine contaminants for genotoxic activity.

1. Attention is drawn to the enormous variations in yield experienced in commercial cotton growing under rain-fed conditions. Yields at Namulonge have ranged from 161 to 1163 lb./acre.
2. In seeking an explanation of this enormous variation past and present fertilizer trials in Uganda have failed to show that much of this variation is due to nutrient status.
3. From Manning's previous analysis of yields in relation to seasonal rainfall, over many district trials, it is evident that 20–25 in. of rainfall per season is optimum.
4. The purpose of more recent studies has been to examine the effect of distribution of rainfall within the season. Clearly the pattern of crop water requirement, also within the season, must supersede a simple seasonal concept of crop water use.
5. Experimental evidence, based on several seasons' data, led to the conclusion that evapotranspiration rates exceeding the commonly accepted figure of 0·8E must in fact occur in order to provide a satisfactory explanation of results recorded.
6. The within-season pattern of water requirement of an annual arable crop is shown to be more dependent on its state of development than on the pattern of a physical model based on calculations of energy availability.

Between April and September 2000, 60 injecting drug users in Scotland died or were hospitalized with severe illness. Laboratory investigations suggested that Clostridium novyi and other bacteria were important aetiological agents. To determine associated environmental/behavioural factors a case-control study was undertaken with 19 ‘definite’ and 32 ‘probable’ cases in Glasgow, Scotland. For every deceased case (n=19), up to three proxy individuals were interviewed. Three controls were identified for each case. Multivariate logistic regression analyses compared (i) all cases and controls; (ii) definite cases and matched controls; (iii) probable cases and matched controls. In all three analyses injecting into muscle or skin and injecting most of the time with a filter used by someone else were the variables most strongly associated with illness. Comparing only muscle-injecting cases and controls, cases were significantly more likely to have injected larger amounts of heroin per average injection than were controls. The findings make an important epidemiological contribution to the understanding of the public health and clinical implications of the contamination of illicit drugs by histotoxic clostridia.

General recommendations are made (e.g. Gomes, 1977; Dzuik, 1970) that, in order to achieve maximum conception rate and litter size, sows should be mated or inseminated 9 to 15 hours prior to ovulation and that this coincides with an interval of 30 to 36 hours after the start of standing oestrus (SO). This assumes that sows will be in standing oestrus for around 48 hours. Surprisingly little data is available on the length of SO In modern sows on current production systems. Accordingly length of SO was determined in a large commercial herd weaning at around 3 weeks of age.
A team of observers determined the start, completion and duration of SO in 101 multi parity sows. The sows were tested for SO daily from weaning at 8 hourly intervals (00.00, 08.00 and 16.00 hr) until the end of SO by taking sows individually from their small post-weaning groups to an oestrus checking area. Boars were penned around this area and SO was checked using the back pressure test.

Early lamb production is a specialist enterprise in which profitability is highly dependent on getting all the lambs sold while prices are still high in Spring when lamb is in short supply. This involves lambing in late December/early January. Hence ewes must be mated in August. Conventionally in the UK, this has been achieved by the use of progesterone-impregnated sponges and pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG). The ram effect is a powerful technique for the control of sheep reproduction. The objective of the present study was to reinvestigate the value of teasers for the stimulation of seasonal activity in the ewe.
125 (2-3 yr) Mule ewes (Blue-faced Leicester x Swaledale or Blackface), isolated from rams for two months, were used to investigate the effect of different durations of teasing on the stimulation of seasonal activity. Groups of 25 ewes were exposed to either teaser vasectomised rams and teaser ovariectomised ewes (induced into behavioural oestrus by an intramuscular injection of 0.2 mg of oestradiol benzoate) for 1 month (group l), 3 weeks (group 2) and 2 weeks (group 3); or vasectomised rams only for 2 weeks (group4); or left untreated (group 5). At the imposition of treatments, groups were isolated from each other and from contact with other 3heep by a distance of at least 1 km. Plasma progesterone was measured twice weekly on 8 animals, per group to determine ovarian activity.

The ESRO satellite COS-B carries one single experiment aiming at the measurement of arrival direction and energy of celestial gamma rays with energies between 25 MeV and 10 GeV. The experiment is conventional in design and consists of a veto counter, a wire spark chamber, a telescope and an energy calorimeter.
The energy measurement is obtained by a CsI scintillation crystal of 4.7 radiation length thickness. The expected energy resolution at 100 MeV is 50% FWHM. The other detector elements are designed as to cause the least possible degradation of the energy measurement.
The possibilities for the detection of a small contribution of π -origin gamma rays in the presence of a power-law type background spectrum will be discussed.
